THE VIXEN LS

The goal of the VixenLS project is to bring affordable, reliable and sustainable upgrade options to Vixen motorhome owners in DIY, Hybrid-DIY and turn-key options.

LS motors are available from $400 salvage yard pulls to new crate motors from GM, to $20k performance built racing motors. Every automotive shop across the USA has experience with LS motors and every auto parts store stocks original and upgraded parts.

Challenges The LS long block fits within the engine bay dimensions of the Vixen TD and XC, but custom headers and exhausts, and possibly an accessory bracket or two will need to be designed and manufactured.

Benefits More HP and Torque than the Cummins r2.8. Lower cost components (e.g. AC compressor, air filter, etc.). Charge air controllers (e.g. intercoolers) are not needed. Anticipated lower operating temperatures. Low first and second gears not needed.

FAQ's

What can I expect with a Vixen LS? Low cost conversion, ubiquitous availablity of parts and expert mechanics across the USA and Canada, the complete elimination of low power and overheating problems, and confidence to travel anywhere in your Vixen.

When will parts be available? Most of the parts necessary for an LS swap are already available. Currently, we are developing a solution for headers and motor mounts, which should be available Q3 2023 (plans are free). Why gas instead of diesel? In 1986, the first production year of the Vixen, diesel was less than gas. So there was a compelling reason for a diesel pusher. The more recent historical price different between gas and diesel wipes out most price benefits of diesel. It is currently estimated that a typical stock 5.3L LS will come in at a solid 22.5 MPG highway in the Vixen. Lastly, diesel may be phased out long term in states like California.

What's wrong with the Cummins r2.8? Nothing! It is still the best option if budget is not a concern. There are some issues with this option in terms of long-term parts availability, but these should be resolved over time. For a Cummins conversion, contact The Best Parts.

If I DIY my upgrade, do I have to purchase parts from V2 Garage? No. We will publish DIY plans and specifications for any fabricated parts needed such as motor mounts and headers, at no cost. Our goal is to get Vixens back on the road at the lowest possible cost, and with a high confidence in taking your Vixen anywhere.
